In the semester of Fall 2013, Professor Simon Mochrie taught the first class in the TEAL classroom. After developing Phys 170 over the years to be tailored to the needs of pre-med students and biology majors, Prof. Mochrie has combined active learning class time - such as group activities and clicker questions - with traditional lecturing. In the TEAL classroom, students learn to work in groups and understand through hands-on activities how physics can be relevant to biological processes
For an overview on the innovative Phys 170 course, read Prof. Mochrie’s article “Vision and change in introductory physics” (2014).
