The TEAL (Technology Enabled Active Learning) classroom was recently created on Yale’s campus at 17 Hillhouse to facilitate innovating teaching approaches. The seating arrangement in round tables promotes group discussions. Whiteboards, projectors, and monitors are spread around the room and can be used in various combinations. The instructors can lecture at a specific whiteboard while being filmed and shown simultaneously all over the room. Slides and other class material can be displayed on the monitors or projectors as needed.
The physics department has been among the first to experiment with teaching selected introductory courses in this new space (Phys 170-171, Phys 200-201). These courses have taken advantage of the tools of the TEAL classroom and have implemented non-traditional approaches to teaching.
