Society of Physics Students Talk: Grant Schumacher, Department of Physics, Yale University, “Ultracold Atoms: Trapping the Coldest Gases in the Universe”

Event time:
Wednesday, November 18, 2020 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm
Location:
Online () See map
Event description:

The first realization of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in 1995 was the culmination of decades of theoretical and experimental work with trapped gases. Using these trapped BEC systems, we can answer longstanding questions about quantum systems. But creating this new state of matter requires ultracold temperatures—about one-millionth of a degree above absolute zero!
In this talk, I will introduce the techniques we use to create the coldest samples on earth. Time permitting, I will also talk about current work with trapped atoms at Yale.
