Superconducting quantum circuits have emerged as an important platform for both fundamental physics and applications such as quantum information processing. In this seminar, I will discuss my work integrating two separate systems with superconducting circuits: superfluid helium and surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating on a piezoelectric substrate. Superfluid helium is a low-loss, viscosity free quantum fluid, with excellent thermal properties at cryogenic temperatures. I will discuss experiments characterizing the thermalization of superconducting qubits with superfluid helium, and briefly discuss the possibility of experiments mediating the interaction mechanical modes in the superfluid with superconducting circuits. Surface acoustic waves are an important tool for classical sensing, telecommunications, and studying quantum states of matter. I will briefly talk about experiments coupling SAWs to an entirely different quantum system, the two dimensional electron system in exfoliated graphene, and use this work to motivate our efforts engineering the interaction of SAWs with superconducting qubits.
