Event description:

The countdown to science with the James Webb Space Telescope has begun! This year has seen many milestones in the assembly and testing of the telescope, as well as preparation for the first science observations. Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) programs have been defined, Early Release Science programs have been selected, and the call for Cycle 1 proposals is out. In this talk, I will present the capabilities of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and resources for planning programs with this groundbreaking instrument. I will additionally give a brief summary of JWST’s journey over the last two years and the next steps that bring us to launch in mid-2019. Finally, I will describe three extragalactic MIRI GTO programs which showcase science with the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) and the MIRI imager.
