Yale Physics hosted a two-part open house this Spring for the 58 prospective students who were admitted to the Yale Physics graduate program in 2024.

The 2024 Graduate Virtual Open House on March 6 introduced the students to Yale Physics program requirements,  student groups, and graduate resources.  The event included multiple breakout sessions so students could find out more about their subfield of interest.

For those who were able to visit campus, Yale Physics held an in-person Open House  from April 4-6. Thirty-six prospective students attended and participated in activities such as lab tours, meetings with faculty; as well as learned more about academic paths, New Haven, and what to expect as a Yale Physics graduate student.

Stacey Watts, Yale Physics graduate registrar, stated, “The 2024 virtual and in-person open house were well attended with visitors from around the world, including [from] Tokyo, Vienna, and Serbia. In-person visitors had a chance to take in the New Haven skyline during lunch with faculty and a poster reception with the wider department community at the top of Kline Tower.”

Watts continued, “Beyond taking in the newly renovated spaces on Science Hill, visitors also enjoyed the option of touring the East Rock area and meeting current graduate students during Thursday’s informal dinner at Barcelona Wine Bar, Game Night at the hotel, and several available lab tours. Almost half of visitors who attended either the virtual or in-person open house accepted offers to join the graduate program.”

This year’s cohort of incoming students is smaller than past years by design. The department is looking forward to welcoming eighteen new graduate students into the program this Fall, with one deferral student also joining us next year.

In addition to Watts, the Yale Physics graduate studies team includes: Daisuke Nagai, Director of Graduate Studies; Helen Caines, Director of Graduate Admissions; Rona Ramos, Graduate Program Coordinator.
