Ben McDonough (YC’2024) presents at QCS22 in Dallas, TX

November 29, 2022

Ben McDonough (YC’2024 Physics (Intensive) major) was invited to present his paper “Software tools for autonomous error mitigation based on probabilistic error reduction” at the Third International Workshop on Quantum Computing Software, which was held on November 13, 2022 as part of the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC22). The workshop proceedings will be published in IEEE Digital Library Xplore

McDonough said, “It was such an amazing experience to present my research… last week… ! This project was the culmination of research I conducted last summer as part of the Fermilab Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center summer internship program. It was a great opportunity to work with scientists at other institutions, and the knowledge and insight of my collaborators was an essential ingredient in helping this project come together. I’d like to thank Professor Peter P. Orth, who was my internship advisor, as well as Anrea Mari, Nathan Shammah, Nathaniel Stemen, Misty Wahl, and William Zeng from the Unitary Fund for making this opportunity possible.”

McDonough continued, “The conference was a wonderful chance to exchange ideas with a group of people who are passionate about quantum computing and its future applications to many different real-world problems. The presentations at this workshop and the keynote speech by Professor Fred Chong were incredible, and I am coming away excited about further research in this area and the future of QC as a whole.”

“Through writing this conference paper, I have gotten my first experience with all of the drafts, chains of comments, and small details about figures that make writing an academic paper such a rigorous process, and I am sincerely looking forward to doing it again. If you are interested in reading more about this project, the paper is available on Arxiv here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.08611.pdf

“My appreciation goes out to the Yale Physics department and Fermilab SQMS, whose support made my trip to Dallas to this conference possible! This was my first time visiting Texas, and I certainly hope it won’t be my last.”
