Welcome to Benji Remez who comes to us as a Yale Prize Postdoctoral Fellow from the University of Cambridge. He is working with Leonid Glazman in Sloane Physics Lab in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics. Remez is interested in theoretical condensed matter, quantum materials, and mesoscopic physics.
Remez graduated from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2012, and completed his masters degree with Moshe Goldstein at Tel Aviv University in 2018. In 2022 he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Nigel Cooper. Outside the office, he enjoys playing frisbee, jamming on guitar, and inflicting terrible puns on his surroundings.
About his research, Remez states, “A fundamental paradigm of modern physics is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: When many particles are brought together, emergent new physics appears which cannot be understood by considering them individually. As a condensed matter theorist, I study such collective phenomena in quantum materials and the laboratory systems that are used to mimic them. Recently, I have focused on electron-antielectron pairs called excitons, which allow us to access coherent Bose-Einstein physics in solid-state systems, giving rise to unique optical and thermodynamic effects.”
