The Yale Society of Physics Students (SPS) recently hosted a series of “Physics Of” events for middle school and high school students in the local area. This event was first launched in 2019 and aims to introduce younger students to physics through engaging topics and demonstrations. It has since featured many classes ranging from “The Physics of Juggling” to “The Physics of Relativity.”

This school year, the SPS community service committee worked with Yale Pathways to Science to teach lessons on “The Physics of Electricity” and “The Physics of the Modern World.” In December 2025, over 30 Connecticut high school students visited Yale to attend the event. Students had a great time participating in a Van de Graaf generator demonstration and a circuits workshop. They also enjoyed watching a demo of radioactivity using a Geiger counter and a demo of quantum levitation in which a cooled superconductor was suspended in the air by a magnet. In the spring semester, SPS members brought the “Physics of Electricity” lesson to 7th and 8th graders at the Davis Academy for Arts & Design Innovation and the King Robinson Interdistrict Magnet School. Students there were again very engaged in the activities and SPS plans to return in the future for lessons on other topics.
